This means that you can pick whichever you like and should be fine, although with that said here's the stuff you need regardless of class: You'll appreciate why it's considered a classic as the game unfolds.No matter which class you choose at the start you're still free to level up your character however you want, the starting class only has an effect on your starting stats and abilities. Remember the game is from 1999, so whilst the engine looks dated (even with the modern patches) the story is top notch.I recommend playing that class only after you've beaten the game once or twice and know the layouts and enemies better. Playing as a PSI guy is tough, especially when you're a new character with few skills.Marine is OK, too, but is more like a stock FPS with the ammo and weapon breakdown working against you. First play I recommend Navy so you can get hacking skills and still be decent in melee combat.Which ties in with the "use the wrench and Smasher upgrade" mentioned earlier. Don't assume an area is clear an hour after you've left it. They're amazing at filling in the backstory and are needed to get ahead. Listen to all the audio logs you find.It can be a very tough game, but that makes every small victory that much more sweet. There's a lot of fetch-the-key, open-the-door gameplay, but no modern things like quest markers and excessive hand-holding.
